"7 Tips to Getting in Shape for the Summer"
June 2007                                                                                   Edition #2

Hi, Bettina here, with "Healthy Thoughts", and "7 Tips to Getting in Shape for the Summer"

Summer is just around the corner and it's the best time now to get in shape for the blazing, sunny glory.

"Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person's physical, emotional, and mental states." ~Carol Welch

There will be plenty of time to get out swinging the golf clubs, getting onto the court to play tennis, hiking, biking, swimming or other fun water sports, relaxing, traveling or enjoying your own backyard.

Summer is fun and full with opportunities to get the exercise you need. I promised myself and my family to take time this summer and get in shape.  Are you willing to join me?

Send me an e-mail if you like to join me with this venture: rspt@risingsunpt.com

Read the article below where I share 7 of my favorite tips to get in shape for the summer and beyond.

Free yourself from your old belief systems: "I get pain when I exercise" or "I don't have time".

Sounds familiar?

Read the 7 tips below.

But first let me share a few summer events I want you to know about:

I will meet the most inspirational and well-known teachers in the field of lymphedema: Bruno Chickly and Renee Romero and other inspired therapists, who are dedicated to working with people managing lymphedema, in the midst of the summer heat in Florida. To resolve the mystery: What's the latest in Bruno Chickly's discoveries in the treatment of lymphedema.

I cannot wait to come back and share with you the most up-to-date information.

During the same weekend however, while I am soaking in the latest facts in lymhedema treatment, there will be this amazing event in our own Bay Area backyard, I like to share with you:

Since I can't attend however, I'd like to invite you instead:

I'd like to invite all WOMEN to this single most amazing women's event ever offered to Bay Area Women. It's an event that can change your life forever; by giving you plenty of easy-to-use, powerful strategies that have the potential to help you take your life to new levels you'd only dreamt about.......

And I'd like to invite all MEN to attend the single most amazing men's event ever offered to Bay Area Men.
"Imagine..... Being Blessed By Over 100 radiant Women...."

Both event will be held at the luxurious Hayes Mansion in San Jose. And, if you register before June 8, you will receive fabulous bonuses you cannot resist. Please find out yourself:

I can't wait to hear from your experience, and I can't wait for me to share with you what the experts said.

Love and Health,

Bettina.

Here are the

"7 Tips to Getting in Shape for the Summer"

Tip 1:

Getting in shape for the summer can be easily accomplished at home, outdoors or in the gym. But remember it does not have to be expensive!

Although: You must have FUN.

Now get a paper and pen, and brainstorm what physical activities you enjoy.

Whether it is gardening, walking at the beach, swimming, playing sports, going to the gym, enjoying your hometown scenery, walking the dog, going on one of the San Francisco's Stair Walks, playing with the kids, or simply something you always wanted to do. There are tons of opportunities to get fun exercise.

Use your own ideas, be creative, and have fun.

Get your planner now and schedule at least 3 to 4 activities per week for the next 4 weeks. Plan at least 15 - 30 minutes for each activity.

Tip 2:

Start your exercise routine slow and easy. Pace yourself! If you are not accustomed to exercise, start with a short walk. Don't plan climbing stairs for 20 minutes, if you have a hard time walking on a flat surface.

Don't exhaust yourself the first time you exercise. Be easy on yourself. Increase your exercises slowly to a higher level.  If you experience any increase of symptoms, you should reduce the intensity or length of exercise, or you might have to modify your program. If your symptoms persist, I recommend you seeing a Physical Therapist to modify your the exercise routine. Increase of your symptoms is always a red flag and needs medical attention.

Tip 3:

An Exercise Routine should include all aspects of exercises:

-       Aerobic exercise: walking, hiking, biking, exercises which increase your heart rate

-       Strengthening exercises: to get you stronger

-       Stretching exercises: to get you more flexible

-       Relaxation exercises: to relax more actively

Stretch and strengthen your muscles before you start walking, warm up and prepare your body.

Remember to plan time to relax too. You can choose either meditation or other relaxation techniques you already know, or visit the experts Cheeta and Moon at Rising Sun Physical Therapy. They are experts in relaxation techniques. Call to make the appointment: 415-282-4083,

Tip 4:

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water during the day (6 to 8 glasses). Add 1-2 glasses of water if you exercise lightly, and more with heavier exercise. This will help you stay healthy and get the most benefit from exercise.

Tip 5:

Dress comfortably, long sleeves, long pants, protect from the sun and summer heat. Plan to schedule your outdoor activities during the cooler part of the day. Wear good shoes if you plan to walk.

Tip 6:

Please follow these important precautions to make sure you are up to a healthy exercise start:

If you have heart trouble, high blood pressure, chest pains, and pain going into your left arm, breathlessness, over 50 years of age or suffer of any muscular skeletal problem preventing you to walk, or you are unsure, consult with your medical doctor or your physical therapist before starting any exercise program.

Tip 7:

If you feel your exercises are getting easier, increase the frequency, the distance or add an additional component: if you walk on a flat surface, walk up a hill. Challenge yourself. But don't irritate any symptoms.

Enjoy your new summer exercise routine!

"My experience with Bettina has been both physically and emotionally healing. For years, I've suffered from mild to severe back pain that is caused by a moderate scoliosis in my spine.  Through my work with Bettina, however, I learned to manage my pain in a new way. With Bettina's guidance, I not only became more disciplined and focused in the exercises I could use to strengthen and comfort my back, but I also became acutely aware of the fact that I could assist my body in healing. Bettina introduced me to the subtleties of how my body, from where it really needed to stretch or breathe to how I could tap into my own intuition. I feel stronger than I ever have now, and I'm grateful for Bettina's coaching and for her natural talent."
